Professional Learning

Short Videos

The following video was developed, recorded and produced by Year 7 students in Radford City Schools, USA. It is simple but delivers a great message in our quest to engage more voice and agency in our classrooms..
 Taken from lyrics.

Let us learn for ourselves instead of telling us. Real education includes collaboration. When we're working together we're better at collaboration...not focus on our weakness but on our ability...I learn best when the lesson has real-world relevance.
Russell Quaglia is a pioneer in the field of education, particularly the areas of student voice and aspirations. He believes that we can and must learn from students if students are to reach their full potential in relation to academic, personal and social growth. He advocates for the notion that student voice must be listened to, learned from, and acted upon to reap benefits for the entire school.
Why do some classrooms look the same now as they did 70 years ago? In this passionate talk, second grade teacher Kayla Delzer speaks about her mission to revitalize learning and the classroom environment. Kayla explains how to release the power in the classroom by giving students ownership of their learning and making it relevant to them. Breaking down the four walls of the classroom allows her students to become globally connected - and you won’t believe the endeavors her students conquer by embracing purposeful technology.

Self Audit

Here are some questions for you to consider in relation to voice and agency below. Why not complete a self-audit? What are you doing really well? What small changes could you make to foster more agency and voice in the classroom?

Learning Goals

When students set learning goals, they become more active participants in their own learning.Learning goals allow students to focus on what they are supposed to learning. They guide their decisions and effort. Good learning goals are specific, measurable and focused on the students’ abilities.Learning goals are used to provide feedback to students on their current level of performance and where they should be headed. They provide a destination for the learning-what to learn, how deeply to learn it and how to demonstrate the learning. Learning goals help students to establish concrete and achievable goals to measure their own learning

Shared Lesson Design
True student voice and agency in learning involves students designing their own learning experiences. Admittedly this is a major leap for most of us, as we challenge ourselves to incorporate more voice and agency into our classrooms and gradually relinquish control. However if we are to truly engage our students we need to provide students with the opportunity to play a significant and genuine role in their own learning. How can students and teachers collaborate to co-design learning and assessment with students?
